1873年にオックスフォード大学及びケンブリッジ大学の学者によって、ニュージーランド大学カンタベリー・カレッジとして創立された国立大学です。5学部を有する総合大学で、現在の学生数は約1万7千人。ニュージーランド国内外での評価は高く、THE世界大学ランキング2020では、301-350位にランクイン。数多くの学術関係者、政治家を輩出しています。複数の学生寮には国内の学生の他、約1,869名（2019年時点）の留学生が滞在する、国際色豊かな学修環境です。
